My favorite spot was the web 2.0 online productivity tools. I was aware(somewhere in the back of my mind) but didn't know where to go. Now I do. This course forced me to look at sites and informatin I would not have done otherwise. Great Job! I'm sorry I let time get away and had to hit it hard the last three days to get done, but I'm glad I made myself do it.

I went on Librivox and persued their catalog. Lots of classics that are required readings for students are located here. It's an option I could give when our copy of Frankenstein is checked out and they need to read it that day. Almost all the teens have an mp3 player. Only downside is the amount of time to download. I experimented with Frankenstein-- a pretty small book-- and the time was 1 hour 22 minutes. Not something they could do here at the library and a lot have an even slower connection at home. But still a pretty cool site! I looked at Brooklyn Public Library and checked out their offerings. Audios and videos to download. Wonder how long the video download is-- does it work like netflicks which is almost instantaneous? I wish we had the $$ to offer the downloadable audios-- they would be very popular.

podcasting

This is my least favorite thing we've done. I just can't get into the podcasting. I like the vidcasting--. I do not have an mp3 so don't take the podcast with me places. I don't like going on the computer to listen to information. I tried to get my teens interested in creating promo podcasts for programs but couldn't get it organized-- schedule conflicts and such so I dropped it. Every once and a while I will listen to podcast on NPR but not very often. I did listen to a podcast on NPR today for this excercise.

this is a site I go to regularly. I love to play the really stupid videos--and believe me there are a lot of those. It can also be helpful at work. My Rockband footpedal for the drums broke. I went on utube and watched a video on how to repair using duct tape and we were good to go. There were several of these repair videos to chose from. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ247OgBAeA

OMG. too much really fun and interesting stuff to do. I could have my whole life on the computer and never leave my chair. I looked at hairmixer and had fun changing up faces with makeup and hairstyles. I think the teens would really like this site(they probably found it two decades ago!) I also played around on the sports istat site. I am in a weight loss contest with my daughter and it would be ufun to post our results here and visually see how we've done. I noticed a lot of the award winners were sites you had us explore earlier such as flickr, google docs, etc. These apps are really cool , useful and a lot of fun. Thanks again Kam

This is terrific! I've got an excel spreadsheet I was moving back and forth between office and home. This will be very helpful. I also love Zoho writer and google docs. What a great way to save money and still have the programs needed. Fantastic!

Looked at several of the suggested wiki sites. Did notice that most required some type of registration and then confirmation before you could edit the page. One wiki had disclaimer at top " Because of vandalism problems, e-mail confirmation is now required. " We thought about creating wikis about teen programming at the library but were concerned about simply letting teens post could result in utter chaos. To do edit control over the wiki could be very time consuming and also kinda defeat the purpose of letting them post their ideas immediately. We could not come to a consensus about this so didn't create a wiki. I am on a wiki for a Yart committe I am on and everytime someone edits the wiki, I get an email. this is very annoying as the edit could be something as insignifigant as a spelling correction and I get an email!! I'm not fond of this. I did find the Ready to Read wiki on the ALA wiki site and read some of this. It has some great information and handy links. I might even register and post some information about my experiences doing the workshops. I find wikis very useful to read but time consuming to host.

Read article from Library Journal 9/1/06. Talks about need for library to have user-centered change. I agree with the heart of the article BUT it is very hard to implement in our size library. We have no one-- no one who does IT except for a hired tech who fixes problems sometimes. We have no one on staff who has the skill or the time to implement some of these new technologies. It sounds like a sad excuse but it is reality. We are fighting to just provide the services we provide with the staff we have. I would love to have downloadable audios--but we barely have money to buy audio books as is. I would love to have instant messaging reference but we have only 1 staff manning the ref desk and while it is quiet at times, somedays it can be overwhelmingly busy especially when the kids are out of school. Also looked at essence of library 2.0 blog-- in answer to John Blyberg's post, Library 2.0 debased. These comments were interesting. It talks about focusing on patron's needs as the true definition of library 2.0 Assesment of what patrons want is critical to library 2.0. Library 2.0 is not just web 2.0 althought these programs can be important they are not in and of themselves library 2.0. key point is users add value to the library. I like this comment the best. I feel better reading this blog that our library is not so far behind as I thought when I read the first article. We are customer focused and that is the real point of libary2.0 Maybe?

Played around in Technorati-- looked at the white house blog. This is interesting but of course it is probably done by staffers. It doesn't have the personal touch that most blogs have-- it is information posting rather than obama's thoughts and feelings on the day or issues. Kinda disappointing but he's too busy to do an actual blog-- Looked at today in photos- uncertain where these come from, surprised it is not news photos --Top 100 tags were interesting-- but didn't tell me much. Recently read a book called Click which talked about what search terms people search on the web-- these was more revealing than the top 100 tags. Was surprised the movie link took me to IMDB-- the same that comes up in google search. Was hoping for individual's blogs on movies they saw--- did see some later when clicked on reveal links-- interesting site but I probably will not read many blogs-- not enough minutes in the day.
by the way, it is a quiet day at the library and on the reference desk so I am trying to catch up with 23 things and see if I can finish by Friday-- it's a lot to do!

Del.icio.us is interesting and I can see how it could be useful. I can't see how I can find the time and energy to take advantage of this service. It might be helpful on the ref desk, but I'll have to play around with the idea and the site some more . very interesting.

Went to gaiaonline and signed up. Tried playing one game and got totally lost. Can see how my anime/manga kids might like this site. I'll talk with them at the anime club meeting and see if anyone plays here and get some help from them. It does look cool.

My favorite simple game is mahjong-- I bought the game several years ago and loaded the program on my home computer. Then when it became availabe online i started playing it there. My son gave me a mini(9" computer that you can connect to the internet from but can't do much else) and it has mahjong in its game list. So now I'm mobile with mahjong! I also enjoy spider solitaire and often play it over lunch and late at nite. It's easy for me to waste hours playing these simple games. I have a runescape account, mainly because the teens play it a lot. I am awful- don't spend enough time playing( it requires a real committment to make achievements)
On line gaming is great--- I enjoy it much!

I've used Im a lot with my kids and their friends. It can be fun. My kids will be on the web, my space, the phone, checking email and im at the same time! I think that is crazy, but they think I'm just old.

Tried topix.net-- liked that opened to local news page-- was not user friendly. I could not find how to subscripe to newsfeeds via this page-- got frustrated and quit.

Thought that Syndic8.com as clunky to search, then had to save urls and put in google reader-- it automatically put in msn feeds. Didn't want to create another site to go to-- have too many already!!!

Technoarti was easy to use but I don't see myself reading other's blogs. I'm on computers at work all day and avoid them as much as possible at home. Give me a book to read instead. As i said before-- I'm OLD

I guess I could figure out how to add images to the blog after I went on to the image generator section. I guess I have to have the image on my hard drive. Can't import from flickr directly, right? Anyway, this is the image I chose from flickr to tag with ctls 2.0. I went to rockport last wintre birding and took lots of pics. I also saw whooping cranes--- I loved them.

PLAY PLAY PLAY This is the easiest for me. I've always lived with the motto if you can't have fun at work why go to work. I work hard but have as much fun at the same time.

The hardest habit for me is viewing problems as challenges. I tend to view problems as stopsigns.

Thoughts about Google

Google book is interesting. I usually use the Guggenheim project webpage to find public domain books. A lot of the google site seems to be to get people of buy books from the companies who advertise-- Having the site help locate a source for buying out of print books may be helpful.

Scholar is basically a specialized search engine. The results that Nortwestern University got with a 70% increase of use of their databases was amazing. I guess the students didn't use the library catalog at all to search for the articles. Once it was on google, everyone accessed it! That was a real eye opener for me. The first place I looked as a student for materials was the library catalog.( I grew up preGoogle) That students today don't even think of using the library catalog is amazing.

I'm totally uninterested in google alerts. I get enough junk as is.
